"A Dream of Red Mansions" takes the daily life of Rongguo Mansion as the center, the love and marriage tragedies of Baoyu, Daiyu and Baochai as the main line, and the history of the four famous Jinling aristocratic families Jia, Shi, Wang and Xue as the dark line. It shows the decline of the family and society in the feudal era.

The versions of "Dream of Red Mansions" are relatively complicated, mainly divided into two types: manuscripts and printed editions. The early manuscripts Jiaxu edition, Jimao edition, Gengchen edition, etc., mostly use "The Story of Stone" as the title, and the content is incomplete. Eighty chapters. The engraved editions are mainly one hundred and twenty chapters co-organized by Cheng Weiyuan and Gao E. The first 80 chapters of the edited version published by the People’s Literature Publishing House with the collation and annotations of the Dream of Red Mansions Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Arts are based on Gengchen’s edition, and other manuscripts and Cheng’s and Gao’s editions have been included in the school; the last 40 chapters are based on Cuiwen Bookstore The typesetting Cheng Jia edition was used as the base edition, and three other Cheng Jia editions and one Cheng Yi edition were included in the school. In addition, more than 2,000 annotations were made. This is a very well compiled version of A Dream of Red Mansions.
