"Heart" is the last part of Natsume Soseki's late trilogy "After the Equinox", "Pedestrians" and "Heart". It tells the story of a young student "I" who accidentally met a world-weary Mr., and became friends who forget the years. Before Mr. committed suicide, he wrote a letter to "I", explaining the reason for his suicide: when he was young, he won his friend and rival K in an unsightly manner, which led to K's suicide. Since then, he has doubts about the goodness of human beings and cannot get rid of the sense of guilt. It portrays an image of an intellectual struggling with ethics.
