This book is the last of Maugham's four masterpieces of novels. After the first draft of the novel was completed, he said: "Writing this book brings me great pleasure. The background of this book is set during the two world wars (1919 to 1940s). The protagonist Larry served in the Air Force during World War I. He once flew high in the vast sky and wanted to "go far beyond the power and power of the world." After retiring from the army, Larry didn't go to college, didn't get married, and didn't want to get a job. He left his relatives and friends, traveled in Europe, and finally went to India.
